ON NETFLIX: SORRY, HATERS

If you have a Netflix subscription and like to watch movies instantly on your computer, you might want to check out this film called Sorry, Haters.  It stars Robin Wright Penn as a New York television “executive”  who is not quite what she seems.  The film plays on our post 9/11 sensibilities, turning them on their head.  Penn comes in contact with a Syrian cab driver, inserts herself into his life, we assume for the good, but soon learn that Penn is unbalanced and has a violent ulterior motive that probably wouldn’t be possible if we did not live in a world where Arabs are assumed to be the enemy.  I did not “like” this film in the pejorative sense, but found it to be thought provoking, especially as a character study.  You are left wondering what Penn’s motives are–Does she hate herself? Is she a lover spurned? Does she hate her boss? Does she hate Arabs?  Or does she simply want to commit an act of terroism without being accountable?  Watch the film with a friend as you will surely find yourself wanting to debate these and other questions.
